LAKE MEAD RAILROAD TUNNEL TRAIL
|
The Lake Mead Railroad Tunnel Trail, located along the shores of Lake Mead
in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, is one of the most scenic hikes
around this most beautiful part of Southern Nevada (and it does not require
you to pay the National Park fee).
Look for bighorn sheep, ravens' and owls' nests, lizards and antelope ground
squirrels as you explore this historic railway - which was built to carry supplies
to the workers at the Hoover Dam. An easy and level hike perfect for all ages
and endurance levels (the hike is approximately one mile round-trip and very
level), the trail offers unmatchable views of Lake Mead and its surrounding
rock formations.
Driving directions from Las Vegas:
Take US 93 South toward Boulder City. Stay left when you see the signs to
Lake Mead/Hoover Dam and do not go through the Boulder City Scenic Drive
route. After approximately 1 mile you will see an exit to the left for the Lake
National Recreation Area. Shortly after you enter you will see the visitor
center on the right hand side - about 100 feet further is the parking area for
the Railroad Tunnel Trail.
