The Juneteenth “Celebration of Freedom Weekend” is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. It was on June 19, 1865, some two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, that news broke to those Americans in Texas that the war had ended and the enslaved were now free. Since then, generations of African-Americans, along with other ethnic communities, have commemorated the day as one of reflection, faith, renewal, community and cultural pride. No pets, please.
