WE USHER IN THE SEASON with music from the Baroque era. Francesco Manfredini’s Christmas Concerto opens the program, setting the seasonal mood. An Italian composer, violinist and church musician, he demonstrated a gift for easy melodic invention. Dieterich Buxtehude was a Danish-German organist whose works are frequently performed in church services. Das neugeborne Kindelein (newborn infant child), taken from a collection of sacred poetry circa 1558, celebrates the newborn Jesus and the coming of a new church. Arcangelo Corelli’s Christmas Concerto was published in 1714 and bears the inscription Fatto per la notte di Natale (made for the night of Christmas). It is one of the most often performed pieces of classical music ever composed for the holiday season. We conclude the musical feast with our Chorus-In-Residence, the Las Vegas Master Singers, joining the orchestra for Part One of George Frideric Handel’s uplifting and transcendent Messiah, a hallmark of holiday choral works.
