True music must repeat the thought and inspirations of the people and the time. My people are Americans and my time is today.” – George Gershwin (1898 – 1937)
Relive the sassy excitement of the Roaring Twenties! Igor Stravinsky’s buoyant Scherzo creates a broad musical smile while Darius Milhaud’s Le création du monde celebrates the exotic spirit of Josephine Baker. The Philharmonic’s own Cory Tiffin solos in Leonard Bernstein’s rollicking Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs and Kurt Weill’s suite from his famous Threepenny Opera emulates a 1920s cabaret band. The concert concludes with the granddaddy of all symphonic jazz blends, George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Pianist Andrew Armstrong whose performance of the piece with The Symphony Orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio has been viewed over 1,250,000 times on YouTube, is the guest soloist.
