Presented by Las Vegas Writers Group and Writers of Southern Nevada
How can stories in the news help writers?
Stuck for a storyline? Speakers Morgan St. James and Vito Colucci, Jr. share how they have used headlines in their work and how you can tap into this great resource. explore the many ways headlines can
- Become the basis for a plot.
- Provide that perfect crisis or twist ending
- Act as a writing prompt
It doesn’t matter if you are writing from your own experiences that generated headlines, helping someone write their story or making up fiction. As a former police officer and later a high-profile private investigator, Vito used his own headline-making experiences to write compelling books. Morgan, on the other hand, helped Cheryl Cuccio, an abuse and incest survivor whose story made headlines in the late 80s write her and her husband’s memoir. Once again the story made headlines. Morgan also used media articles about a clever money laundering scheme as the basis for a fictional plot.
