About the Death Valley Natural History Association
Who We Are
The Death Valley Natural History Association (DVNHA) is an independent, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 1954. Operating as the official authorized philanthropic and educational partner of the National Park Service, our mission is to directly preserve, protect, and interpret the irreplaceable natural and cultural resources of the Death Valley region. We proudly channel our proceeds to bankroll critical youth education programs, independent scientific research, specialized wildlife preservation, and vital park conservation initiatives.
What We Do
In cooperation with government partners, DVNHA translates the complex science of the desert into accessible public knowledge. We operate the official park bookstore locations—including the primary hubs inside the Furnace Creek Visitor Center and the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge center—offering informative, deeply researched insights into the region’s incredible geology, ecology, and human archeology. Through public lectures, field classes, and comprehensive printed media, we help visitors forge a lifelong connection to this delicate ecosystem.
Why Death Valley?
Death Valley is a legendary land of stark geographic extremes. Flanked on the west by the towering peaks of the Panamint Range and on the east by the rugged, steep precipices of the Black Mountains, this massive basin holds a series of global records. It houses the lowest geographic point in North America (Badwater Basin, sitting at 282 feet below sea level), generates the hottest recorded ambient temperatures in the Western Hemisphere, and provides shelter to an astonishingly rich, resilient matrix of endemic desert wildlife. From the geometric salt flats of Badwater to the volcanic, wind-carved colors of Artist’s Palette, Death Valley operates as a majestic living monument to the tectonic forces that sculpted our planet.
