Pow Wow Etiquette for Visitors

Guests attending their first Pow Wow can help honor the gathering by following a few important guidelines:

  • Listen carefully to the master of ceremonies and arena director.
  • Stand and remove hats when requested during Grand Entry, prayers, flag songs, honor songs, and other ceremonial moments.
  • Do not enter the dance arena unless visitors are specifically invited.
  • Ask permission before photographing or recording individual dancers, singers, elders, or ceremonies.
  • Respect announcements requesting that photography or recording stop.
  • Do not touch a dancer’s regalia or personal belongings.
  • Refer to dancers’ clothing as regalia rather than costumes.
  • Keep children supervised and away from restricted areas.
  • Support Native artists and vendors when shopping at the event.

When uncertain about a protocol, wait for instructions from the master of ceremonies or respectfully ask an event staff member.
