Title: SOULFUL CREATURES: Animal Mummies in Ancient Egypt
More than ten years ago, staff at the Brooklyn Museum found 30 animal mummies in boxes that had not been catalogued. Now, this intriguing part of Ancient Egyptian culture is on display at the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art in the exhibition Soulful Creatures: Animal Mummies in Ancient Egypt. Created with the Brooklyn Museum, the show includes almost 100 real artifacts, such as animal mummies, CT scans, X-rays, Egyptian art, and objects used in rituals. Soulful Creatures offers new insights into how and why animal mummification was practiced, sharing several interesting theories about these ancient customs.
Animals were important in the daily lives and beliefs of ancient Egyptians. They served as pets, food, and symbols of the gods. Over 4,000 years, millions of animals were mummified and buried, but this part of Egyptian culture is not well known. Soulful Creatures is the first major exhibition to explore animal mummification, using art history, archaeology, and forensic science to explain these ancient practices. The exhibition, drawn from the Brooklyn Museum’s Egyptian Collection, features mummified cats, dogs, birds, reptiles, and more, along with artifacts that show how ancient Egyptians connected with animals and their gods.
Soulful Creatures: Animal Mummies in Ancient Egypt is organised by Yekaterina Barbash, Curator of Egyptian, Classical, and Ancient Near Eastern Art, and Edward Bleiberg, Curator Emeritus at the Brooklyn Museum.
