The inaugural Holo Holo Music Festival took place in Northern California at the Frost Amphitheater on the Stanford University campus in 2022. The festival’s name, “Holo Holo,” derives from a Hawaiian expression that means to travel, to sail, to move. Picture friends saying, “Let’s Holo Holo up country!”—a call to explore and embark on an adventure. This essence of movement and exploration is at the heart of the festival’s inception.
Dan Sheehan, co-owner of Good Vibez Presents, curates the festival lineup with a deep personal connection. Growing up in Ewa Beach, O’ahu, the rhythms of island music and reggae were the soundtrack to his childhood. These genres—the heartbeat of the islands—form the backbone of his work as a festival producer and venue owner. For Sheehan, curating the Holo Holo lineup is more than a task; it’s a passion. He’s honored to showcase and celebrate these bands at the festivals.
Good Vibez Presents has been creating multidimensional concerts and festivals along the West Coast, Hawaii, Arizona, North Carolina, and Mexico for the past 25 years. Notably, they host the largest reggae-rock festival in the country—the California Roots Music & Arts Festival in Monterey. Their events are more than just music; they’re rooted in supporting nonprofits, uplifting small businesses, and elevating creatives in the community.
The stunning artwork for all Holo Holo Music Festivals comes from Oahu-based artist Shar Tuiasoa of Punky Aloha Studio. Her creations add visual magic to the festival experience, capturing the essence of movement, music, and cultural fusion.
Holo Holo desires to keep moving. After its successful debut, the festival expanded to Las Vegas and Sacramento in 2023—a natural progression for its fluidity. And the journey continues! Look out for several Holo Holo locations in 2024 and beyond. Each festival promises mindful, sustainable gatherings rich with music, art, and the spirit of adventure.
