A contemporary art museum on the main campus at UNLV, the Barrick Museum of Art offers free admission to visitors. It hosts exhibitions, events, and educational programs that showcase the artistic and cultural diversity of Las Vegas and beyond.

The Museum’s History

The Barrick Museum of Art at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) has a rich history that reflects its evolution from a natural history museum to a contemporary art institution. Established in 1967 as the Barrick Natural History Museum, it initially focused on showcasing the natural history and environment of Nevada and the wider Southwest. Over time, the museum expanded its collection to include Native American artifacts and live desert animal specimens.

In 1979, a significant donation of pre-Columbian art from UNLV alumna Mannetta Braunstein and her husband Michael marked a turning point for the museum. This donation formed the foundation of a broader collection of Mesoamerican and Aridoamerican cultural artifacts, setting the stage for the museum’s transition to a more diverse cultural institution.

In 1981, the museum moved to its current location, which was the university’s original gymnasium. Since then, it has undergone several renovations and expansions, including the addition of a research laboratory wing in 1994.

In December 2011, the museum underwent another transformation. It changed its name to the Barrick Museum of Art and became part of the UNLV College of Fine Arts. This shift in identity reflected the museum’s new mission to showcase contemporary art and cultural artifacts while serving as a creative hub for both the university and the broader Las Vegas community.

Exhibitions and Programs

Today, the Barrick Museum of Art features six galleries that host rotating exhibitions of local, national, and international artists, as well as selections from its permanent collection. Additionally, a window gallery allows for site-specific installations that can be viewed from outside the museum.

The museum offers a diverse range of events and programs throughout the year, including artist talks, workshops, performances, film screenings, and art walks. Collaborations with other UNLV departments and community partners enrich the museum’s educational offerings and outreach efforts, making it a dynamic center for artistic exploration and engagement.
