About the Parish

St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church serves Orthodox Christians from Greek and non-Greek backgrounds throughout the Las Vegas Valley.

The parish traces its local history to the 1950s. Its first permanent home was in a former synagogue near Maryland Parkway and Carson Avenue. The present El Camino Road property was acquired in 1983, and the campus later developed into the parish’s principal worship, education, ministry, and cultural center.

Today, the church supports regular liturgical worship, religious education, youth activities, adult study, charitable work, cultural programs, fellowship, dance groups, language classes, and community events.

People do not need to be ethnically Greek to attend a service or inquire about the Orthodox faith. Visitors should remember, however, that sacramental participation follows the church’s religious practices and clergy guidance.

Byzantine Architecture and Sacred Art

The sanctuary is one of the campus’s most recognizable features. Its Byzantine-inspired design includes a prominent dome and cross, arched entrances, clay-tile rooflines, columns, religious mosaics, decorative reliefs, and a formal courtyard.

Inside, Orthodox iconography presents biblical figures, saints, and sacred scenes according to the artistic and theological traditions of the church.

The iconostasis separates the altar area from the nave and is central to the sanctuary’s worship setting. The altar and areas beyond the iconostasis are restricted according to church practice.

Visitors should observe the artwork respectfully. Do not touch icons, liturgical objects, candles, vestments, or furnishings unless invited to do so.

Guided church tours may be offered during selected festivals or scheduled programs. Ordinary public access does not guarantee a formal architectural or religious tour.

Orthros and Divine Liturgy

The parish currently lists Sunday Orthros at 8:45 a.m., followed by Divine Liturgy at 10:00 a.m.

Orthros is the morning prayer service that prepares the congregation for the Divine Liturgy. The Divine Liturgy is the principal Eucharistic worship service of the Orthodox Church.

The event uses outdoor portions of the 10-acre campus and may include food-service areas, entertainment, vendor spaces, seating, family activities, and cultural displays.

A regular visit to the church should not be confused with festival admission. Likewise, festival entry does not grant unrestricted access to private parish, office, classroom, altar, or clergy areas.

Community Center and Hall Rentals

Current rental options may include Panos Hall, Kokkos Hall, and the Grand Foyer. Each space has its own layout, intended uses, availability, and rental conditions.
