Winchester Theater welcomes Opera Las Vegas to present “The Billy Goats Gruff” on Saturday, May 4, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Winchester Dondero Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive, off Desert Inn Road. John Davies cleverly repurposed music from world-famous operas to tell the story of three billy goat friends whose after-school games are spoiled when a bully blocks the bridge, preventing them from going home. Using what they learned about bullies from their moms, dads, and teachers, the trio prevails and teaches a lesson about forgiveness and friendship. Admission is free.
Opera Las Vegas was formed in 1999 by tenor Mark Thomsen, educator Paul Kreider, and soprano Glorid Marinacci Allen to further the love of opera in the local area. Their early years were mainly marked by concerts, sometimes performed by renowned soloists like Marni Nixon and Erie Mills. In 2004, the company’s first full opera was “Carmen,” followed by classics such as “Calleria Rusticana” and “La Boheme.” In 2014, Opera Las Vegas appeared for the first time in the Smith Center’s Cabaret Jazz with a sold-out “A Passion for Puccini” performance.
The company was accepted and recognized as the only professional member in Nevada in the organization Opera America in 2015. Their vision is to be a strong cultural force in the Las Vegas community, creating unforgettable moments of inspirational artistry and bringing diverse representation into new explorations of the art of opera.
