How much does it cost to watch them or to tip them? Let’s answer these pressing questions and more to give you a glimpse into the world of Fremont Street’s street performers.

What do buskers do?

Buskers are performers who use public spaces to showcase their skills and talents and rely on tips and donations from the audience. Buskers can perform a variety of acts, such as singing, dancing, playing music, juggling, doing magic, doing comedy, doing acrobatics, doing impersonations, or doing anything else that can attract and entertain people.

On Fremont Street, you can find buskers doing all kinds of things, such as:

  • Playing buckets, guitars, saxophones, violins, or other instruments
  • Dressing up as celebrities, superheroes, villains, or other characters
  • Posing for photos with tourists
  • Doing body painting, henna tattoos, or caricatures
  • Performing stunts, tricks, or feats of strength
  • Doing puppet shows, ventriloquism, or making balloon animals
  • Fire breathing, fire spinning, or fire eating
  • Demonstrating martial arts, breakdancing, or capoeira
  • Mime, clowning, or improv
  • Reciting poetry, storytelling, or spoken word
  • Hypnosis, mentalism, or psychic readings

Who are the buskers?

Fremont Street’s buskers form a diverse ensemble, boasting various backgrounds, motivations, and goals. Professionals rely on busking for income; hobbyists enjoy it or supplement funds. Locals showcase talents regularly, while visitors perform occasionally. Acts range from solo to team performances.

Why are the buskers there?

The buskers are there for various reasons, but mainly because Fremont Street is a popular and lively destination that attracts millions of visitors each year. Fremont Street offers a lot of opportunities and benefits for buskers, such as:

  • The expansive and varied audience is eager to watch and tip generously.
  • An energetic, lively atmosphere amplifies the overall performance.
  • Historic, iconic backdrop adds to the allure.
  • Competitive, challenging setting driving performance motivation.
  • Supportive, collaborative community nurturing the artistry on display.

Driven by a love for performance, buskers share their passion with a desire to entertain, bring joy, provoke thought, evoke emotions, and create lasting memories. Their goal is to connect, inspire, challenge, have fun, and pursue dreams.

When are the buskers there?

The buskers are there every day between 3:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m., which are the time frames that are allowed by the city of Las Vegas. However, the buskers may vary in the frequency and duration of their performances, depending on their availability, preference, and demand.

Performing schedules vary among buskers: daily, occasional, or specific days. Some cover entire time frames, multiple slots, or shorter periods. Choices include peak hours, light shows, off hours, or quieter times.

The buskers may also vary in their presence and performance, depending on the season, the weather, the events, or the crowd. Some buskers may perform more often, or more enthusiastically, during the busy seasons, the favorable weather, the special events, or the large crowds. Some buskers may perform less often or less energetically during the slow seasons, the harsh weather, the regular days, or the small crowds.

How much does it cost to watch or tip the buskers?

It does not cost anything to watch the buskers on Fremont Street, as they are part of the free entertainment that the Fremont Street Experience offers. However, it is customary and appreciated to tip the buskers, as they rely on tips and donations to support themselves and their performance.

The amount of the tip is up to the discretion and generosity of the viewer. It may depend on the quality and enjoyment of the performance, the interaction and engagement of the performer, and the budget and expectations of the viewer. The tip may also vary depending on the type and style of the performance, the skill and talent of the performer, and the demand and supply of the performer.

Some buskers may suggest or request a specific amount of tip, such as $5, $10, or $20, while others may leave it open or flexible. They may accept tips in cash or other forms, such as credit cards, Venmo, or PayPal, while others may prefer one or the other. Performers might collect tips before, during, or after the performance.

  • The tip is a voluntary and optional gesture, and the viewer is not obligated to pay or tip the busker, however.

How do buskers sign up to perform on Fremont Street?

The buskers must sign up to perform on Fremont Street through a registration and lottery program that is run by the city of Las Vegas. The program was established in 2015 to address the issues of overcrowding, safety, and quality of the street performers on the pedestrian mall.

The program works as follows:

The program is designed to manage the time and place where expressive activity can occur while maintaining public safety and well-being on Fremont Street. The program also aims to ensure fair and equal access to the performance locations and to promote diversity and quality of the street performers.

To register for the lottery program to be a busker on Fremont Street, you have two options:

  1. Performers can register online using the city’s Street Performer Portal and provide their name, contact information, and a description of their act. You will also have to agree to follow the rules and regulations that govern street performers on Fremont Street.
  2. Or, one can register in person at the downtown law enforcement substation, located at 425 Fremont St., near the stairs to SlotZilla. You will need to show your ID and confirmation number, which you can get online or at the substation.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Securing preferred time slots and locations involves daily participation in an online lottery conducted at 9:00 p.m. Results can be checked either online or at the substation. A random assignment allocates one of the 38 designated performance locations, identifiable by six-foot-wide poker chip decals on the ground. Additionally, you’ll receive a QR code corresponding to your assigned location and time. Performances must occur within specified time frames, spanning from 3:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.
